What is the dMAT?
The dMAT is a standardised, computer-based academic aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) — the same organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS.
It is designed specifically for Master's applicants and measures general academic ability alongside subject-specific knowledge.
When was it introduced?
The dMAT was introduced from 2026 onwards as a new element in the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates. It applies to applicants aiming for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.

Why was it introduced?

Who needs to take the dMAT?
You must take the dMAT if:
- You are an Indian graduate (undergraduate degree earned in India).
- Your undergraduate degree is in one of these fields:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Economics
- Business or Management
- You are applying for a Master's programme in Germany.
- You are aiming for Summer Semester 2027 or later.
- You registered for APS on or after 29 June 2026.
Who is exempt?
You do not need the dMAT if:
- You are applying for a Bachelor's programme in Germany.
- You are a PhD applicant.
- Your degree is outside the three fields listed above.
- You are in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme.
- You registered for APS online or shipped your APS documents before 29 June 2026.
- You have already received your APS certificate for a completed procedure.
Where to book the dMAT
Registration is fully online via the official g.a.s.t. portal at www.d-mat.de.
Test centres are located across India, including:
Ahmedabad · Bengaluru · Bhopal · Chandigarh · Chennai · Kolkata · Mananthavady · Mumbai · New Delhi · Pune.
Seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis — book early.

When will results come?
Results are released via the g.a.s.t. test-taker portal. For the first sitting:
- Test date: 26 September 2026
- Certificate available: 12 October 2026
You can download your official dMAT certificate directly from the portal.
How the dMAT connects with your APS certificate
- You register for APS as usual (document verification).
- If you fall under the affected categories, you must also register and take the dMAT.
- Your dMAT certificate is submitted alongside your APS documents.
- The dMAT result is referenced on your final APS certificate.
- Both are then sent to your chosen German university during application.
Important: The dMAT does not replace the APS certificate. It is an additional requirement for certain applicants.
